dog behaviour problems

dog behaviour specialist covering Chelmsford, Brentwood & surrounding areas - I can help you get the best out of your dog

Whilst the old adage “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is not true, the earlier dog behavioural problems can be identified and appropriate help sought; the easier and quicker it is to put things right. Age has no barriers when it comes to unwanted dog behaviour. You may find yourself with a pup who does not behave in the way you expected or would like, or your adolescent/adult dog has started to show challenging behaviour. These are some of the issues I can help with:

  • Destructive behaviour
  • Excessive barking
  • Digging
  • Howling
  • Jumping up at people
  • Nipping
  • Poor recall
  • Separation anxiety
  • Biting
  • Difficult around other dogs
  • Pulling the lead

adolescent and adult dog training

At the age of 5 months your puppy starts to lose their baby teeth and once their adult teeth come through they are classed as an adolescent. Yes, that’s right, your dog has become a teenager! and their behaviour can become somewhat challenging. Your cute, fluffy and beautifully behaved puppy can become a juvenile delinquent overnight and may become 'deaf' to your commands, even those they had they had mastered as puppies.

What most owners want more than anything else is for their dogs to walk nicely on the lead, rather than being pulled down the road. And to come back when called when they are having off lead exercise. As you will see from the videos below I am able to help you achieve these aims and make walks a lot more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Penny was brilliant with giving me lots of help with my dogs behaviour issues. She helped with other things such as which food I should be feeding them (I had no idea how bad some dog food is) & also has so many other recommendations. I've really seen a difference in Alfie since we saw Penny & I would highly recommend. Penny was very responsive and very easy to meet up with. Thank you again!

problems on and off the lead: meet Yuki, a beautiful white German Shepherd

Yuki used to pull like a train on the lead, meaning her owner was literally pulled over and going for a walk was a nightmare.

The video to the left was taken the day after I fitted a head collar and showed Yuki's owners how to use it correctly.

Five stars. We would highly recommend Penny. After giving up hope on our boy's excessive barking and not knowing how to stop him we decided to call Penny. She spent the afternoon with us and after she left we saw improvements with his barking and his behaviour. We booked in to see Penny again with both our dogs for some more training and agility course and they absolutely loved it! Again, cannot recommend Penny enough!

And here's Yuki again. Her owner couldn't let her off the lead to give her the exercise she needed as she wouldn't come back when called.

Just look at her now!

case study: Finlay the Golden Labrador

Dog with a marrow bone

Treat your dog: Finlay the Labrador enjoys his new marrow bone

To the left is Finlay, a beautiful Golden Labrador, getting to grips with his new bone marrow treat. I was called in by Finlay's owners to help address his unwanted behaviour which included biting, chewing and excessive barking. As well as using clicker training to promote and encourage good behaviour I also advised Finlay's owners to look at his diet. I also suggested the use of bone marrow treats to stimulate the four-month-old puppy and give him something other than chewing the furniture to keep him entertained!
